J R Ullman London: Butterworth 1973 pp x + 412 price £10 There is currently a renewed lay interest in pattern recognition, stimulated by the controversy raging as a result of the publication of the so-called Lighthill report on artificial intelligence ( Physics Bulletin July 1973 p411). This report draws attention to the comparative lack of success of the attempts to automate human intelligent behaviour, and pattern recognition is certainly to be included in this rather sweeping condemnation.
