Escalation Theories and Their Applications in Information Systems Projects

Nipon Parinyavuttichai, Angela Y. Lin · 2013

One of the greatest achievements of Information Systems (IS) projects development is to success fully complete the projects and provide customers with satisfaction. Despite large amount of efforts and resources allocated to IS projects, some projects were failed and some were even cancelled. Researchers come into a conclusion that “Escalation of Commitment” is a key ingredient that contributes to IS failure. This article provides the definition of escalation of commitment and explain the situations of IS failure due to escalation of commitment from four perspectives. The objective of this article is to raise awareness of escalation situations in IS projects for researchers and practitioners as it is the first step to improve the efficiency of IS development (ISD) processes and prevent the practitioners from IS failure.
