Mathias Wegerer, Simon Tjoa · 2016
In today's knowledge society data plays a central role. Large parts of an organization's critical data currently resides in databases which makes them an attractive target for cyber-attacker. The increasing digitization and interconnection of organizations combined with growing complexity of IT systems led to increased attack surface of most organizations. At the same time cyber-adversaries increased their skill sets leading to sophisticated attacks in the recent past. While it is evident that the business behind cyber-crime is growing, the question for defenders arise how to protect their systems these days. Therefore, in this paper we firstly want to present the state-of-recent in the domain of database honeypots which makes use of the advantages of the defender and secondly want to highlight how a database honeypot can be created using open source technology such as MySQL.
