Wideband local nets enter the computer arena

William E. Burr, Robert J. Carpenter · OSTI OAI (U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information) · 1984

The authors describe a proposed standard for wideband local networks that joins three completing commercial products. The standard is concerned with local network protocols and connections for mainframes and supercomputers and it is hoped it will extend the benefits of wideband broadcast networks to an ever larger base of users. It has been drafted by the American National Standards Committee X3T9.5. This local distributed data interface (LDDI) is electrically identical to the loosley coupled network (from Control Data Corp.), but its protocols are really more like those of hyperchannel (from Network Systems Corp.) and computer interconnect (from Digital Equipment Corp.). The similarities are discussed.
