Let me say at once that one should not be put off by the 'Great ideas' part of the title of this book: there is fortunately no enumeration of great ideas, or of ideas which just did not make it! In fact, this is a well written popular exposition, which can easily serve as a first introduction to this fascinating field. The author holds the Kalinga Prize which is awarded by the United Nations for distinguished scientific exposition.
