Lower entropy courses in physics
Michael Mark Woolfson · Physics Bulletin · 1964
A noteworthy effect of the expansion which has taken place in university education is a change in the ability distribution of the students. Except in those departments which have lowered their standards, the range of ability has changed little, but the ability of the modal student is now somewhat lower than hitherto. In physics, at any rate, the growth of the lower end of this distribution, where a larger proportion of failures is expected, has increased the overall wastage rate to an alarming degree and the point has now been reached where we should consider whether any remedial measures are possible.
