Home Fog Server: Taking Back Control from the Cloud
Binqi Zhang, Wei Li, Bing Bing Zhou, Albert Y. Zomaya · 2016
The emergence of fog computing shows that the computational resource can be extended to the edge of the network, so that the transmission latency and bandwidth burden caused by cloud computing can be reduced. For the home automation (HA) and personal wearable devices (PWD) applications, one more issue should be addressed: the protection of personal data. In addition, we find various gateways and protocols have been deployed at homes without strategic alignments. We argue that these issues can be addressed by employing the fog computing paradigm. In this paper, we propose the home fog server (HFS) approach as the new data and policy manager by consolidating gateways via virtualization. This approach can effectively address the data privacy issues and reduce the number of the gateways deployed at home.
