The Routledge Companion to Embodied Music Interaction

Costas I. Karageorghis, P Ekkekakis, JM Bird, Marcelo Bigliassi · 2017

This chapter presents a cross-disciplinary summary review of literature that addresses the source of those physical and imagined intentions which motivate interacting bodies, focusing on the notion of ‘agency’. The concept of agency is seen to be of great significance to those who wish to characterize and understand musical engagement – and yet its meaning and usage appear to vary, both across and within disciplines. The chapter concludes by presenting an explicit definition of agency as it pertains to the study of embodied music interaction.
