A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of wireless nodes that all of them may be mobiles. In MANETs, there are many challenges that can be reduced by a better clustering algorithm, i.e. by implementing a more robust cluster head selection -- election algorithm. This paper is to enhance the cluster head selection process and to increase the efficiency of wireless communication in MANETs. This paper presents a timer based least ID clustering algorithm (TLCA) for MANETs. It compares the performance of the proposed TLCA with the original LCA over different packet sizes, simulation time periods and packet interval times. Performance evaluation uses average delay and average throughput. Experimental results reveal the robustness of the proposed TLCA in terms of average delay and average throughput. The proposed TLCA outperformed the original LCA in all simulation scenarios. The proposed TLCA works well as a cluster head selection and it enhances the wireless communication performance. Consequently, TLCA reduces power consumption in MANETs.
