Point extraction from cross sections of fractured long bones for registration

Based on image registration, fractured bones can be aligned accurately in image guided surgery. The key to an accurate registration is the point extraction from cross sections of a fractured bone. This paper presented a new method to extract points on cross sections, including coarse and fine segmentations. The coarse segmentation filtered out the points where the angle between vertex normal and bone axis were larger than a threshold. And the fine segmentation employed an improved region growing based on the relationship between these connected triangular facets. Phantom experiment verified the method. Cross section points could be extracted. An accurate registration could be achieved and help doctors complete a fracture reduction.
