Recent progress in wireless local area network (WLAN) technology has made it possible torealize real-time vehicle-to-vehicle data communication. This paper reports the development ofa WLAN data-link based on IEEE 802.11 protocol for supporting collaborative off-road vehicleautomation. A WLAN-based real-time data-link was developed based on a Nokia C021 wirelessLAN card to support vehicle-to-vehicle signal exchange. The two modes of continuoustransmission and burst transmission were developed to satisfy the special requirements fortransmitting different types of information. The initial evaluation in laboratory verified thefeasibility of using a WLAN-based data-link in supporting off-road vehicle automationapplication. This data-link could transmit/receive designated data string at 1 Hz rate. Fieldevaluation of this technology is needed to test its reliability and safety before using this system tosupport actual off-road vehicle automation.
