Wireless networks have recently evolved to very complex systems, due to the increasing diversity of competing radio technologies, applications and service providers which coexist in the same environments. In such a scenario, we argue that performance optimization cannot only rely on advanced hardware platforms and radio capabilities, but mainly depends on the availability of suitable software platforms for controlling and coordinating radio communication and network protocols within the complex wireless ecosystems. The WiSHFUL project addresses these issues by proposing a flexible and unified radio and network control framework for standardized technologies as well as Software Defined Radios.
