Adaptive Techniques for GPS System Enhancement

Cynthia Junqueira, Moises Vidal Ribeiro, João Marcos Travassos Romano · 2000

This work aims to apply adaptive array techniques as a countermeasure device to improve the performance of Global Positioning System (GPS) in presence of multipath transmission and other interference signals. In fact, spatial processing techniques has not been rather exploited in GPS applications. In this sense, this work intends to open some new perspectives with the proposition of two alternative techniques to mitigate multipath interference. Two classes of solutions are proposed: the first one is based on the joint utilization of a direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation technique together with a constrained adaptive algorithm. The other approach consists in using a self-adaptive CM (constant modulus) technique, which avoids the need of a pilot signal and a DOA estimator.
