An Adjacency Constraint on Argument Selection
Kei Takahashi, Kiyoshi Ishikawa · Institutional Repositories DataBase (IRDB) · 2004
Instead of positing seperate syntactic mechanisms, we propose a single working meory mechanism that uniformly accounts for (i) a puzzle about topicalization pointed out and explained in the LFG literature, (ii) asymmetries in coordination structure observed and analyzed in various syntactic frameworks, and (iii) the eects of inserted phrases and pauses.A very earlier version of the intuition underlying the theory described here was presented at the Japan Cognitive Science Society (JCSS) annual meeting in 2003.We thank the JCSS audience as well as Shûichi Yatabe (the University of Tokyo) for helpful comments, Mafuyu Kitahara (Waseda University) for an informal discussion, and Campbell Hore (Nara Institute of Science and Technology) for native judgments.
