We have already reported on a lookout of the pilot on board a highspeed vessel (jet-foil, 45kt's). This time, we have taken the measurement of the eye-movement and head-rotatory motion of the operator at lookout on board a normal speed vessel (Training ship TAISEI MARU, 5875.88 gross tonnage, 12〜15 kt's) by using the eye-pointer. Compared with the highspeed vessel, the characteristics of a lookout in case of the operator on board a normal speed vessel are as follows : (1) The eyes of the operator move broadly breadthwise, and in any navigational area, the average area of the gazing position forms broadly breadthwise ellipse. (2) The eye-movement speed of the operator in case of navigating in a narrow area is faster than that in an open area. (3) The rate of the saccadic eye-movement (the speed of eye-movement is over 30 deg/sec) is smaller, and the operator is ready for recognizing the motions of the target. (4) The motion of the head-rotation is wider and more frequent. The time ratio when he watches port and starboard sides is higher, which shows about 70%.
