Empowering the hacker in us: a comparison of fab lab and hackerspace ecosystems

A large number of community based spaces for individual and social creation and production have emerged over the past decade. The new and easy access these spaces provide to small scale production technologies and specialized design and manufacturing knowledge has the potential to empower individuals to bring about significant soci al change. We study two such spaces, a hackerspace and a fab lab to improve our understanding of their role and influence within the same urban area.
