An experiment to measure inclusive photon and pi photoproduction

NA14-was set up at the CERN SPS to carry out a programme of photoproduction studies using a high energy, high intensity, tagged photon beam.This thesis covers certain aspects of the early operation of the experiment.In particular, the simulation and analysis of data taken with the Imperial College electromagnetic calorimeter is described in detail.Results on the experiment on 77 photoproduction are presented and discussed.Early results on direct photon production are also presented.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many individuals have provided me with their help and assistance during my research.In particular, I would especially like to thank my supervisor Ion Siotis,
