A Lookout of the Pilot of a Highspeed Vessel at Night

We have already reported on a lookout of the pilot in the daytime onboard a highspeed vessel (jet-foil, 45kt's). This time, we have measured the eye-movement information at night by using the eye-movement analyzer called "eye-pointer". This paper shows that the remarkable points at night compared with in the daytime on a lookout of the pilot with his head fixed forward. The characteristics of a lookout in this experimental result onboard the highspeed vessel(Jet-foil) are as follows: 1. The average gazing time interval at night is about 150msec, and which is longer than the time about 60msec in the daytime. 2. The speed of sight-line displacements of the eye at night is included as the smooth pursuit movement, and is slower than the speed in the daytime. Therefore at night the pilot of a highspeed vessel is ready for recognizing and being aware of the targets. 3. The extent of gazing point showed by the ellipse with the standard deviation of gazing angle is wide horizontally in case of normal speed and in harbor. On the other hand, the extent of that in the daytime has tendency being wide vertically. Therefore in the daytime the pilot of a highspeed vessel takes strictly care of the floating objects on the water.
