Raed M. Bani-Hani, Zaid Al‐Ali · 2013
This paper discusses the SYN Flooding attack, which is a specific type of Denial of Service attacks (DoS). This attack had always been a very important subject to be studied in the Information Security field. It exploits characteristics of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). It can be launched against machines that bind to and listen on a TCP socket. Thus, it can make the machine incapable of providing services to legitimate clients. In addition, the paper will describe the types of attack, variations of the attack, and how the attack works. It will also discuss methods of defense against the TCP SYN Flooding attack and how do these methods work to prevent such attack. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of these methods will be provided.
