Source as Resource
Lois Boggess, Julia E. Hodges · 1990
The paper makes the observation that for large enough text sources, the source can furnish much information that is useful in its own interpretation. An illustration is taken from a system which has as a goal the interpretation of a technical medical reference. The illustration involves a pattern which is used to process certain prepositional phrases. The same pattern allows the hypothesis of part-of-speech information for novel words encountered in the text. The paper ends with a footnote on the need for dictionaries and other large-scale tools, and some complications concomitant with their use.
