Physicists start building the Grid

As scientists tackle ever more complex and challenging problems, the need to perform rapid and powerful calculations is becoming increasingly important. Supercomputers are one option – but even they have their limits. One answer is to take advantage of the millions of computers and workstations around the world, many of which lie idle for much of the time.
