Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics

C B Spurgin · Physics Bulletin · 1977

Arthur H Benade London: Oxford University Press 1976 pp xii + 596 price £11.50 Written, it seems, by a musician-physicist, this excellent book can be appreciated by any musical scientist and many slightly scientific musicians, but both types of reader will be intellectually stretched if they are to tackle all the concepts and careful arguments in the very thorough treatment of this involved subject, which mixes the objective and the subjective. Mathematical demands are truly minimal, as is that for prior knowledge of physics – not even Boyle's law is assumed known – but the complex ideas are carefully introduced and developed to a high level, backed by much experimental evidence and study of simplified models.
