The central argument of this paper is that, as it is, the current host-centric Internet will exhibit serious limitations to handle the large number of IoT devices to be produced in the near future (possibly 40 billion of them by 2021). The problem is that a large number of them will be used in data-centric applications demanding data and device mobility---facilities that the original design of the Internet was not expected to provide as evidenced by its coupling of names and locations. To address the problem, we suggest the use of communication platforms aimed at data-centric applications with mobility support, such as Information Centric Networking platforms. To prove the soundness of our arguments we discuss a smart lighting controller that we have implemented on the Named Data Networking platform. We demonstrate how developers can take advantage of data-centric abstractions such as naming and group communication. We evaluate the controller to show that it is capable of meeting time constraints and superior to an equivalent cloud-based implementation.
