The advent of the mini and micro computer has increased rather than decreased the need for engineers to appreciate that much of their computing cannot be carried out in isolation and that even more consideration must be given to how to interface their localized information and its associated processing into integrated systems to serve the organisation as a whole. Technology for the interconnection of computers in a flexible manner is well established and the extended use of computer networking in Australia is believed to be inevitable.
