Naturalistic approaches to musical semiotics and the study of causal musical signification

Marc Leman · 1999

The naturalist approach, which aims at applying methods from the natural sciences to the study of music, provides a straightforward paradigm for dealing with causal musical signification processes. What is aimed at in this paper is (i) a tentative reconstruction of the tradition underlaying causal musical signification in its relationship to semiotics, (ii) the presentation and discussion of a framework by which aspects of causal musical signification can be studied and dealt with. # Published in: I.
