Information Centric Networking (ICN) has been envisioned as the next alternate way of communication for the future Internet. In ICN, the en-route routers cache the popular content to serve the future requests locally rather than getting them from the source on every repeated request for the same content. Several caching and cache replacement policies have been proposed in the literature. All these policies attempt to maximize the local utility of the respective caches without giving enough consideration to the overall network utility. In this paper, we have proposed an optimal distributed caching policy in which routers share their caches with others and have solved the optimization problem using an iterative framework. In our approach each router in the network makes an independent decision to solve the optimization problem based upon the cost feedback from its neighbors. This improves network performance in terms of network utilization, and cache hit ratio. We have also presented the performance of our proposed optimization model using extensive MATLAB-based simulations.
