Analysis of packet loss processes in high-speed networks

The exact distribution of the number of lost packets in a block of given size is obtained and compared with the distribution under the assumption of independent and identical packet loss probability (the i.i.d. distribution). Numerical examples show that the exact distribution may be worse for applications such as forward error correction.>
