Mobiles look to Maxwell
Edwin Cartlidge · Physics World · 2002
Mobile-phone users should soon be receiving much lower levels of radiation, thanks to a clever use of Maxwell's equations. Researchers at UK company Sarantel have used electromagnetic theory to invent a new kind of miniature antenna that confines much of the energy it produces to a significantly smaller volume than existing devices. The antenna is already used in products that receive signals from global-positioning satellites and could be incorporated into mobile phones within about a year.
