The color filter array (CFA) captures only one-third of the necessary color intensities and the full color image is generated from the captured data by interpolation. In most applications, the generated color image is then compressed using JPEG before storage or transmission. In this paper, a new Bayer patterned color image compression algorithm based on structure separation and the all phase biorthogonal transform (APBT) is proposed. Compared with the conventional ‘compression first followed by interpolation’ approaches, APBT-JPEG is used instead of conventional DCT-JPEG in the compression step. The advantage of the proposed algorithm is that uniform quantization is used instead of the complex quantization table which suggested by JPEG standard. Therefore, the computational complexity has been reduced. Experimental results show that the reconstructed image’s CPSNR of the proposed algorithm performs close to the DCT and outperforms the DCT at low bit rates especially. It shows that the proposed algorithm is more suitable for Bayer image compression.
