Applied Physics: Physicists help tie up a knotty problem

Edwin Cartlidge · Physics World · 1999

The Duke of Windsor is thought to have invented the tie knot that now bears his name sometime after his abdication as King Edward VIII in 1936. However, it was not until some 50 years later that a new knot appeared, when in 1989 the innovation of one Mr Pratt appeared on the cover of the New York Times. No just ten years on, two Cambridge University physicists, using a mathematical model of tie knotting, have come up with six brand new ways to tie a tie.
