A physicist looks at dowsing

Dowsing is well established and widely used. Professional dowsers work for geological surveys and for oil, gas, electricity and water companies. Building workers and farmers use dowsing to locate pipes and drains. Six years ago a dowser used two pieces of wire bent into L-shaped rods to locate a blocked drain on my property. Holding one in each hand he walked across the area. Suddenly the rods rotated. He marked the spot, dug a hole, and there was the drain. This impressive demonstration led me to experiment.
