This paper describes the order statistic median as a robust non-linear Alter in the contemporary signal processing environment The objective is to establish the fact that more emphasis on safety than on efficiency leads to surprisingly simple and effective solutions in several signal processing situations. The paper presents a short survey of new median based digital signal processing algorithms developed by the author(s). These algorithms effectively address several issues, namely, simple design of variable cut off robust filters, reduction of blurring in images, edge and fine detail preservation and simultaneous removal of mixed noise. These new filters are suitable for real time VLSI implementation
