Analyzing Bowstrokes:Why Do We Need Calibrated, Multi-Parameter Data?

Stefania Serafin, Diana Young · VBN Forskningsportal (Aalborg Universitet) · 2006

Measurement of violin bowing parameters has been a subject of special interest within the computer music, acoustics, synthesis, and gesture sensing communities in recent years. The increasing accessibility of sensors, such as accelerometers, and enabling interface toolkits has made it much easier to create sensor systems capable of capturing expressive musical gestures. In the case of the bowed string, there are many areas of investigation, both scientific and artistic, for which this type of detection is invaluable. In this paper, we review the recent progress in measurement systems for bowing parameters, and propose requirements necessary for future systems in order to most benefit the various research areas related to bowed string dynamics. In particular, the topic of sensor calibration is discussed.
