Due to sharp increases in the number of Internet users and an intensifying use of multimedia applications, Internet providers are hard pressed to upgrade their infrastructure to meet these requirements. A prerequisite condition for structuring high-quality network systems is balanced allocation of the system resources and elimination of bottlenecks based on a thorough understanding of performance characteristics of the networks and the Web servers. In this study, we investigate the modeling of Web servers and evaluate their performance characteristics. First, we present results of the basic data gathered by means of benchmark testing that are pertinent to Web server processing performance, including the effect of the size of the documents requested from the Web server on its processing capacity, which is an especially important characteristic of Web servers. We also offer a model of a Web server based on experimental results, examine its validity, and evaluate the performance of Web servers. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 2, 83(12): 12–23, 2000
