The use of computers to solve problems in physics now takes its place along side theory and experiment as a distinct methodology. In computational science theoretical models are simulated directly on a computer; these simulations permit the detailed study of microscopic properties and their macroscopic consequences in a host of problems which may be inaccessible to direct experimental study or too complex for theoretical analysis. Computers are laboratories for experimenting with theories.
