Pirelli dreams of neutrino telecoms
Matin Durrani · Physics World · 2003
Scientists at Pirelli's research labs in Milan are carrying out experiments to see if neutrinos could be used to send information around the globe. These almost massless subatomic particles interact so weakly with matter that a beam of neutrinos can travel from one point on Earth to another without being attenuated or spreading out. By encoding a signal in the neutrinos, data could – in principle – be sent around the globe without the need for cables, amplifiers or other telecommunications infrastructure.
