Supercomputing: Machine blues at the ULCC

The Cray XMP/28 supercomputer at the University of London Computer Centre is to be replaced by a Convex C3840 machine this autumn, the first time a Cray has been replaced by a Convex. The C3 range are the first computers to be made completely from gallium arsenide circuitry which is more power-efficient and therefore cheaper to run, but the choice has caused controversy.
