Labs face threat of closure

Two of the four national facilities funded by the Swedish Research Council – the The Svedberg Laboratory at Uppsala University and the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory at Stockholm University – should close if the council's budget is not increased by SKr15m (£1m) a year. An international panel of physicists commissioned by the research council believes that the closures are needed if Sweden is to remain competitive in accelerator physics and astronomy.
