Detection of Shot boundary is the fundamental step in the video analysis. In many applications such as video indexing, summarization and retrieval, shot boundary detection plays a major role. It serves as a preliminary step to construct the content of videos. Boundary detection involves identification of frames at which the content of scene is significantly different. In this paper, an integrated approach to detect shot boundary using histogram difference of successive frames in a video sequence with the emphasis of twin comparison method and monochrome frame detection is presented. The technique is able to differentiate abrupt and gradual transitions. The aim of this method is to provide a robust algorithm to work in a real time with high performance. The experimental results show improved performance of shot boundary detection by using the proposed algorithm.
