Modern routing protocols demonstrate inefficient performance in challenging environments, such as space communications, military operations, and mobile sensor networks. Basically challenging environment defines networks where the connectivity between end nodes has intermittent property due to dynamic topology or resource constraints. This results in the lack of instantaneous end to end paths, large transmission delay and unstable network topology. Network environments where the nodes are characterized by opportunistic connectivity are referred to as Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) and also opportunistic network. DTN is suitable for communication between wireless nodes in heterogeneous environment and infrastructure less environment. The selection of routing protocol in DTN depends on the application environment in which it is to be used. In this paper, we have made an attempt to review literature of the existing DTN routing protocols. By using different performance metrics such as message delivery ratio, average delay, no. of data message generated a comparison of the existing routing protocols of DTN is done in this paper.
