Adaptive intelligent hybrid MAC protocol for wireless sensor network

Arun Sekar Rajasekaran, V. Nagarajan · 2016

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are primarily battery operated. Due to deployment of WSN in harsh environment, of WSN in harsh atmosphere, it's terribly tough to interchange or recharge the battery. So to enhance the lifetime of WSN, it is very essential to reduce energy consumption. non-identical traffic patterns of WSN plays a vital role in the power consumption. Time Adaptive Hybrid MAC (TAHMAC) is proposed to conserve energy in various traffic patterns. It allows the nodes to operate in three different modes based on the traffic. If the network traffic is low, MAC will operate in CSMA/CA mode and enter into TDMA mode if the traffic is medium. Hybrid mode is selected when the traffic is high. Hybrid mode combines the advantages of FDMA and TDMA. In worse case also, the performance of the proposed protocol is not worse than CSMA/CA mode. TAHMAC operates in collision-free manner and achieves high energy efficiency. Simulation is carried out in NS-2 and the result shows that TAHMAC is better in terms of energy efficiency, delay and throughput.
