Erasures and Error Propagation in Decision-feedback Equalization
Marco Chiani · International Symposium on Information Theory and its Applications · 1994
An analysis is carried out that allows quantification of the effect of error propagation for digital transmission systems employing Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE) for channel with short memory; then, a modification of the decisor is proposed to achieve better system performance. The performance of the modified DFE is analytically investigated, and some computer simulations are carried out to validate the methodology. Finally, the system is applied to long-memory channels, with some results obtained by computer simulation. The analysis confirms that error propagation can be lowered by using erasures in the feedback loop. It is also shown that the introduction of erasures decreases the average length of the error bursts.
