Variable-Reluctance (VR) resolver has been wildly use in harsh environments as a shaft position detection unit with its high reliability and robustness. This paper presents a Variable-reluctance Resolver for electric vehicle applications and a method to design the resolver's salient-pole rotor is mentioned. In this method Finite Element Analysis (FEA) used to analysis a convex shape changes in the rotor magnetic field distribution. Comparing the FEA air-gap harmonics distribution and Resolver to Digital converter (RDC) position error distribution, Position error trends is same as the odd harmonics distribution. Based on the results, a variable reluctance resolver designed for the hybrid vehicle motor absolute position detection, Prototype tests verified the effectiveness of the design method and meet the requirements of the application.
