The Postgraduate Training of Physicists in British Universities
John S.M. Botterill · Physics Bulletin · 1960
I have read with interest the report on The Postgraduate Training of Physicists in British Universities and particularly note that a Ph.D. is considered essentially as leading to a research career and also that only the work of physics departments has been considered. In this University some physics graduates have gone on to undertake research projects in many other departments including this chemical engineering department, electrical engineering, metallurgy and mining. Most of them on attainment of their Ph.D. would still aspire to be physicists whatever their departmental label but they will not necessarily hope to follow a career in pure research.
