Application of wavelet transformation and vector quantization for power system fault detection and compression waveform

In a power grid the occurrence of a fault causes significant changes in the system variables such as current, voltage, etc. Under this circumstance, detection of the fault location is a challenging task. To deal with this problem this paper proposes a systematic approach using the discrete wavelet transform in the power grid for finding the place of the fault. In addition, optimal vector quantization is used to compress the voltage and current profile in order to transmit them to the control center where the fault location processing is performed. The IEEE 9-bus system is used to prove the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
