In this report, we begin by highlighting scholarship at the intersection of community-based technical communication research and user experience design. We then reflect on our process engaging in a three-month long user experience design project in our community of Lansing, Michigan. Finally, we emphasize the need for enacting community-based methods informed by participatory design [1] and Culturally Located User Experience [2] to ensure that communication design processes honor and value the perspectives of all stakeholders. Through this report, we hope to aid others researching developing community-based technologies in their local contexts.
