Voice Coding Technology for Digital Aeronautical Communications
Channasandra Ravishankar, Spiros Dimolitsas · Air Traffic Control Quarterly · 1996
The commercialization of digital voice coding has accelerated in the last decade with the adoption of new standards and the introduction of major new technologies into commercial networks. This has been motivated by capacity limitations on major international and transcontinental transmission facilities; the explosive growth of wireless communications; higher demand for integrated services such as voice, video, and data; and increased interest in communication privacy. This paper provides an overview of the evolution of voice coding technology and reviews the current status of such technology for aeronautical communications.
