Physics and computing: a symbiosis
Rodger Hake · Physics World · 1989
Physicists have needed to compute as long as they have been in business. The computational tools available to them were for many years limited and showed little improvement – printed mathematical tables, slide rules, mechanical and then electromechanical desktop calculators. But the situation started to change about 40 years ago with the development of the stored program computer, and things have moved rapidly since then.
