GIS IN MODELLING THE VIKING AGE ENVIRONMENT IN TAIPALSAARI

This paper describes the possibilities of GIS (Geographic Infonnation Systems) in archaeolo­ gy. GIS-analyses have been used to study the relationship between prehistoric settlement and environmental resources. The Iron Age sites of southern Karelia and Savo, especially the Taipalsaari area, are given as examples.
