Object Tracking in Medical Images Using the MATLAB Morphology Toolbox

Martin Mooslechner, Gabriele Abermann, Gerhard Jöchtl · 2001

The analysis of MRT images by means of computers plays an important role in today’s medicine. A set of images represents a three-dimensional model of the human body or a part of it. Objects, such as tumors, often can be seen in some of the layers that build up the whole model. This paper focuses on one aspect of the numerical determination of the volume of these objects: image segmentation. Before determining the volume, the computer system has to segment the image into regions with similar color or outline. This process is called image segmentation. As there exist different methods of segmenting images, this paper focuses on those implemented in the Morphology Toolbox for MATLAB by describing the toolbox’s functionalities and capabilities regarding image segmentation.
